This blog is a space where Room 3 can share what we have been doing in class with our friends and family from all over the world. Classroom news and reminders will also be posted here so keep checking for updates. Please feel free to leave comments on our posts throughout the year as it is always motivating for us to know that people have been following all of our hard work.

Culture Day
As a finale to our recent Inquiry unit, we had a celebration of the different cultures of children and teachers that make up our school community. The children were offered a range of music and art activities to take part in. A performance by some Aurora College students which included traditional Cook Island drum playing and dancing was enjoyed after our 'cultural' shared lunch. Below are some stories that the children have written:

I ate cake at the Culture Day and it was yum. I did art and it was fun. The name of it was
tapa cloths. To make a tapa cloth we had
to draw on a piece of paper and then we had to crush the piece of paper. We put feathers and grass on it. Alex
Culture Day was
fun and I liked the house teams. The
food was yummy and we ate it in the hall.

On Culture Day I
went to Room 6 to make a paper plane and a jumping frog. It didn’t go so well. After that we all went to the hall and ate
lunch. We all went to play for a little
bit. I liked the people of Aurora
College and how they kept the beat on the drums. The girl kept the beat too when she was
dancing.

On Culture Day I liked when we had the shared lunch
with the sweet things. I also liked when
we got into our house teams and went around doing different activities. My
favourite activity was the gecko painting because we got to put dots around the
outside of the gecko.

Before
we had a shared lunch for Culture Day, Pompallier went to Room 5 to do a
dance. The dance was on the Interactive
whiteboard so we could copy it. Miss
Holland said that we had to get a big kid to help people to do it right. Then we went to the hall. The things that we all brought were on tables
and it looked like very yummy food.
There were savoury things and there was cake. There were lots of people there. It was
noisy. We did things in our house teams
to get food. First we had the savoury
things and then we got to eat the cake.

At
the Culture Day we got in our house teams.
We did cool activities. We had a
shared lunch. Maiya T-Ks uncle came to
share his Polyfest item. The drums were
loud. After that we got free time for
five minutes. Then the big kids did some
dancing.

On the
13th of September, we had a culture day. The origami activities didn’t go very well
for Pompallier. We had a shared lunch
with sweet things too. There was lots of
food because everyone brought something to school to share.

It was
Culture Day at last and I was very happy.
My favourite activity was the first activity and it
was…………..origami. Then it was
playtime. After that Pompallier
travelled on. The next activity was
tapping sticks together. They were
called rakau sticks. I didn’t like that
very much but the next activity was a sort of dance. We got videoed. Then we had the shared
lunch. Yay! I had to bring a savoury thing.

On
Thursday 13th of September 2012 we had a shared lunch at
school. I made wontons but my mum was
late so Miss Swney was the first one to eat a wonton. She said “Yum” and that it was great that Mum
was late because she could eat the wontons.
I loved paper folding because it was fun. The geckos were great because we got to paint
with cotton buds to make spots.
Maiya
Culture
day was interesting because people from a different school played the drums in
the hall. It was funny when the teachers
got up on stage and danced with the girl.
I liked when we were in the house teams and I liked the delicious sweet
stuff at the shared lunch. I liked the
sweet food because there was lolly cake and it was yummy.
Danye
We had
a shared lunch for Culture Day on Thursday the 13th of
September. There were three different
things to eat at the shared lunch in the hall.
We had to do three different activities.
The activities were fun. We did
paper folding with Miss Swney and it was hard because it didn’t work out right. Then we went to Room 1 to use rakau
sticks. We had to get a partner and
watch a video about how to use rakau sticks. Then we copied what saw. After that we went to Room 5 and danced to
some music watching the interactive whiteboard.
Then we tried dancing to the music by ourselves in two groups.
Mya
At
Culture Day we did Aboriginal art. We
had to dot around the gecko with cotton buds dipped in paint. We did music in Room 2 and we could
dance. There were two groups. Some people knew the dance already.
Brooke
At
Culture Day we did Aboriginal art. It
was fun. I also did music. My house is Kavanagh. After the activities had finished we went
over to the hall for a shared lunch. It
too was fun. I liked the savoury stuff
because it was yummy. We did a gecko
drawing. We could only put dots on the gecko and nowhere else. Caleb
Last
Thursday it was Culture Day and we got to eat sweet things like chocolate
marshmallows and those were just a few of the sweet things we had. We had lunch and then……….. we got free time
for five minutes. We watched Aurora
College do their Polyfest item.
Ben
It was
Thursday morning and it was Culture Day.
We had to bring something savoury or sweet for everyone to share. We started in Room 6. We did three activities and then it was playtime. When the bell rang, we had to put our food
away because our house captains came to collect us.

Badminton
Today we had someone from Badminton Southland come to teach us some badminton skills in the hall. We were learning the importance of keeping our eyes on the shuttle so that we could hit it more than once.
First, we threw the shuttle into the air and clapped once before catching it.
Lastly, we were given a racquet to hit the shuttle with. We had to hold the racquet with the hand that we write with, and the shuttle with the other hand, by the feathers. Next we dropped the shuttle onto the strings of the racquet and hit the shuttle gently.
Did you know?
- badminton is the 4th most popular sport in the world - BB
- you use rackets and shuttles
- it is an indoor sport - AM
- the shuttle has a cork covered with goat skin at its base. This is the bit you hit with the racket - MO
- the shuttle has 16 goose feathers above the cork - BC
- it takes 2 feathers from 8 geese to make one shuttle - KR
- a shuttle can travel at 420km/hr

Book Character Day - Friday 7th September
As it was World Literacy Day on the 8th of September, Sacred Heart School had a Book Character Day on the 7th of September. Instead of coming to school in our uniforms, we could choose a character from our favourite book and dress up as them. Lots of children also brought the book to school to share with others.
Can you guess who this person is from our class??? Her character is called Great Aunt Annie who is a polar bear.
What about this person? Do you know who he is?
We had a parade on the concrete court area so that we could see what everyone else looked like. You would agree that there are lots of very creative children and parents at our school!!!!
