In Room 3, we have been learning how to write letters.  A letter needs the following things:
·       A salutation
·       An opening sentence
·       A closing sentence
·       An ending eg From …..
·       An addressed envelope
Below are a selection of letters that some of us wrote to Santa.  The names of the’ authors’ will not be printed so you may have to ask us if we wrote any of these published letters.

To Santa
How are you feeling?  I will leave some cookies out for you.  Can I please have an iPod because I helped my Dad plant potatoes?
From ???????

To Santa
I hope you are well this year because it has been very cold this year.  Please may I have a new Leap pad 2?  I would like to know how many elves are there?  And how many reindeer do you have?  How do your reindeer fly?  Do they have wings or do they use their legs?  How do your elves make all the toys in time?  Here is a joke for you - what do elves first learn at school?  The elphabet.  I will leave you 2 cookies and one glass of milk.  We will leave the reindeer some carrots.
Love from …………

Dear Santa,
How does a reindeer fly without wings?  How does Rudolph’s nose glow?  Please can I have a butterfly pillow pet because I have been nice to my friend’s at school?   I will leave you a piece of celery, and for the reindeer a muffin and a glass of milk.  Haha – just kidding.
From …….

Dear Santa,
How are you?  Are you busy making toys?  This year I have been very good at listening to my Mum.  Can I please have a M.G.P?  How many elves do you have?  I will leave you a drink of milk and a carrot for the reindeer.
From ………..

Dear Santa,
How many elves do you have?  Does Rudolph’s nose glow?  I have been a good girl this year.  Can I please have an M.G.P?  It is a type of scooter.  I will leave you a glass of milk and some carrots for the reindeer.  I don’t believe you deliver presents in one night, I think two nights.  Be careful of my cat, he might meow at you.
Love from …….
PS What does an elf learn first?  The Elphabet.  Haha – just a joke!

Dear Santa
How do your reindeer fly without wings and how many elves are there?  How many reindeer are there?  How do you get through my chimney because you look kind of fat, because you eat a lot of cookies and you drink all of my milk?  Be careful because my chickens might peck you.  Don’t eat any eggs!  If you see any eggs put them in the fridge please.  Please can I have an M.G.P scooter because I have to get my brother out of bed.

Sock Puppets

Sock Puppets

Five Room 3 children showing off their sock puppets made with socks, googly eyes, pipe, cleaners, gemstones and pompoms.
Five of us proudly showing off our new sock puppets

Earlier this week, Mr Gray showed Room 3 how to make sock puppets.  He had raided his sock drawer so that we could each have a sock.  All of us got to pick out decorations such as gemstones, pipe cleaners, pompoms and eyes to make our puppets look cool and awesome. Only Mr Gray and Miss Swney were allowed to use the hot glue gun.  We felt very happy and excited to make these sock puppets.

Share the Road

Today Sacred Heart School had a visit from Constable Herrick, who came to talk to us about safety tips when riding a bike.

Greg, his trusty sidekick, rode into the school hall on his carbon-fibre training bike wearing jandals, dressed in black, talking on his cellphone and NOT wearing a helmet.  We soon put him right with the things that we thought needed improving.
He needed:
  • a helmet
  • high visability clothing
  • covered shoes like sneakers or riding shoes

Constable Herrick also told us the 2-4-1 rule for wearing a helmet:

2         The front of the helmet should sit 2 fingers (sideways) above your eyebrow
4         The side straps that sit either side of the ears should be a 'v' shape
1         Only one finger should fit in between the chin strap and the chin

Always tighten the chin strap first before adjusting the side straps otherwise this will affect where the helmet sits on your head.

Next week the Tour of Southland starts and the cyclists will be riding past our school, twice.  We will be outside, no the matter the weather, shouting Share the Road to support Greg's team.

Measuring - length

Last week, as part of a measurement unit for length, we used to a range of ways to measure the height, width and length of different things around the classroom. We were introduced to the following language: length, distance, measure, tall, taller, tallest; short, shorter, shortest; long, longer, longest.

One person lay on the ground while their partner drew marks on the carpet using chalk.  Next we measured between the two marks using our hands.  We learned that we have different hand sizes so our results were not always the same.

Here is someone from our class measuring the height of a table.  We learned that horses are measured in 'hands' too.

Another form of measuring that we used was 'ladybird' steps or placing one foot in front of the other, touching toe to heel.  Again the results were varying according to the size of our feet.

Using a metre ruler to measure the door and a tableWe learned that when using a ruler we have to line up the thing we are measuring with the zero mark on the ruler.

Nude Food Day - 17 October 2012

Today is National Nude Food Day.  Nude Food Day is about teaching children how their actions can impact the environment and their health. A message that ‘nude food = a healthy body + a healthy planet’ empowered the children to choose healthy, rubbish free food for their lunches and snacks today.  Here are some photos of children from Room 3 with their lunches:

Culture Day

As a finale to our recent Inquiry unit, we had a celebration of the different cultures of children and teachers that make up our school community.  The children were offered a range of music and art activities to take part in. A performance by some Aurora College students which included traditional Cook Island drum playing and dancing was enjoyed after our 'cultural' shared lunch.  Below are some stories that the children have written:

I ate cake at the Culture Day and it was yum.  I did art and it was fun. The name of it was tapa cloths.  To make a tapa cloth we had to draw on a piece of paper and then we had to crush the piece of paper.  We put feathers and grass on it.                                                                                       Alex

Culture Day was fun and I liked the house teams.  The food was yummy and we ate it in the hall.                                                                              Conna

On Culture Day I went to Room 6 to make a paper plane and a jumping frog.  It didn’t go so well.  After that we all went to the hall and ate lunch.  We all went to play for a little bit.  I liked the people of Aurora College and how they kept the beat on the drums.  The girl kept the beat too when she was dancing.
                                                                                       Jade

On Culture Day I liked when we had the shared lunch with the sweet things.  I also liked when we got into our house teams and went around doing different activities. My favourite activity was the gecko painting because we got to put dots around the outside of the gecko.
                                                                                        Robbie

Before we had a shared lunch for Culture Day, Pompallier went to Room 5 to do a dance.  The dance was on the Interactive whiteboard so we could copy it.  Miss Holland said that we had to get a big kid to help people to do it right.  Then we went to the hall.  The things that we all brought were on tables and it looked like very yummy food.  There were savoury things and there was cake.  There were lots of people there. It was noisy.  We did things in our house teams to get food.  First we had the savoury things and then we got to eat the cake.
                                                                                     Keara

At the Culture Day we got in our house teams.  We did cool activities.  We had a shared lunch.  Maiya T-Ks uncle came to share his Polyfest item.  The drums were loud.  After that we got free time for five minutes.  Then the big kids did some dancing.
                                                                                      Kyron

-->
On the 13th of September, we had a culture day.  The origami activities didn’t go very well for Pompallier.  We had a shared lunch with sweet things too.  There was lots of food because everyone brought something to school to share.
                                                                                            Hunter

It was Culture Day at last and I was very happy.  My favourite activity was the first activity and it was…………..origami.  Then it was playtime.  After that Pompallier travelled on.  The next activity was tapping sticks together.  They were called rakau sticks.  I didn’t like that very much but the next activity was a sort of dance.  We got videoed. Then we had the shared lunch.  Yay!  I had to bring a savoury thing.
                                                                                            Greta

-->
On Thursday 13th of September 2012 we had a shared lunch at school.  I made wontons but my mum was late so Miss Swney was the first one to eat a wonton.  She said “Yum” and that it was great that Mum was late because she could eat the wontons.  I loved paper folding because it was fun.  The geckos were great because we got to paint with cotton buds to make spots.
                                                                                      Maiya

-->
Culture day was interesting because people from a different school played the drums in the hall.  It was funny when the teachers got up on stage and danced with the girl.  I liked when we were in the house teams and I liked the delicious sweet stuff at the shared lunch.  I liked the sweet food because there was lolly cake and it was yummy.
                                                                                       Danye

We had a shared lunch for Culture Day on Thursday the 13th of September.  There were three different things to eat at the shared lunch in the hall.  We had to do three different activities.  The activities were fun.  We did paper folding with Miss Swney and it was hard because it didn’t work out right.  Then we went to Room 1 to use rakau sticks.  We had to get a partner and watch a video about how to use rakau sticks. Then we copied what saw.  After that we went to Room 5 and danced to some music watching the interactive whiteboard.  Then we tried dancing to the music by ourselves in two groups.
                                                                                                         Mya

At Culture Day we did Aboriginal art.  We had to dot around the gecko with cotton buds dipped in paint.  We did music in Room 2 and we could dance.  There were two groups.  Some people knew the dance already.
                                                                                    Brooke

At Culture Day we did Aboriginal art.  It was fun.  I also did music.  My house is Kavanagh.  After the activities had finished we went over to the hall for a shared lunch.  It too was fun.  I liked the savoury stuff because it was yummy.  We did a gecko drawing. We could only put dots on the gecko and nowhere else.                                                                                             Caleb

-->
Last Thursday it was Culture Day and we got to eat sweet things like chocolate marshmallows and those were just a few of the sweet things we had.  We had lunch and then……….. we got free time for five minutes.  We watched Aurora College do their Polyfest item.
                                                                                     Ben

It was Thursday morning and it was Culture Day.  We had to bring something savoury or sweet for everyone to share.  We started in Room 6.  We did three activities and then it was playtime.  When the bell rang, we had to put our food away because our house captains came to collect us.

Badminton

Today we had someone from Badminton Southland come to teach us some badminton skills in the hall.  We were learning the importance of keeping our eyes on the shuttle so that we could hit it more than once.

First, we threw the shuttle into the air and clapped once before catching it.

Next we got another shuttle so that we had two.  We had to throw one shuttle into the air and catch it with the second shuttle.

Lastly, we were given a racquet to hit the shuttle with.  We had to hold the racquet with the hand that we write with, and the shuttle with the other hand, by the feathers.  Next we dropped the shuttle onto the strings of the racquet and hit the shuttle gently.

Did you know?
  • badminton is the 4th most popular sport in the world - BB
  • you use rackets and shuttles
  • it is an indoor sport - AM
  • the shuttle has a cork covered with goat skin at its base. This is the bit you hit with the racket - MO
  • the shuttle has 16 goose feathers above the cork - BC
  • it takes 2 feathers from 8 geese to make one shuttle - KR
  • a shuttle can travel at 420km/hr

Book Character Day - Friday 7th September

As it was World Literacy Day on the 8th of September, Sacred Heart School had a Book Character Day on the 7th of September.  Instead of coming to school in our uniforms, we could choose a character from our favourite book and dress up as them.  Lots of children also brought the book to school to share with others.

Can you guess who this person is from our class???  Her character is called Great Aunt Annie who is a polar bear.

What about this person?  Do you know who he is?

We had a parade on the concrete court area so that we could see what everyone else looked like. You would agree that there are lots of very creative children and parents at our school!!!!

Pompoms

In Art, as part of a construction unit, we have spent the last 4 weeks making pompoms.  It has taken a really loooooooooonnnnnnnnggggg time and we have almost finished them.  This has taught us the importance of persistance (to keep at something to get it finished), one of the Habits of Mind.  They are so cool.

Watch those scissors

Concentrating carefully
