Bubbles

Yesterday Room 3 blew bubbles outside on the grass. Some bubbles blew away across the schools roof and then popped. The colours were orange, blue, pink, red, purple and green. The bubbles were see-through. When we looked inside them we could see a rainbow inside them.

Peking Duck Visit

I brought my peking ducklings to school and I got to pick them up in my hands. All of the children were patting the ducklings. The mother duck wasn't a good mother because she didn't sit on the eggs. So we got a bantam to sit on the eggs.
George

Room 3 got to see George's ducklings and it was fun looking at the ducklings. The ducklings looked something like a yellow duck. They had little beaks.
Luke

George's ducklings were cool and they were beautiful. I liked the ducklings. They were yellow and only four days old.

The BIG Snow

In the weekend we played in the snow. To make a snowman you get a little bit of snow and roll it. You keep rolling the ball until it is big enough. My snowman had a carrot for it's nose and it had my scarf on. We used stones of the eyes. In the morning I saw lightning.
Greta

In the weekend I made a snowman. You have to roll snow into a ball. Then you leave it. You make another snowball and do it again and again. You put a carrot for the nose and buttons for the eyes.
Oliver

On Saturday it snowed. It happened at night. It was cold. In the morning when I woke up, I looked out the window. It was snowing so I went to Mum and woke her up. I told her that the snow was there.
Jasmine

In the weekend I saw some snow on the ground and my cat went outside. She couldn't find the cat box so she pooed on the trampoline. In the morning she jumped on my bed.
Max

On Saturday my Dad made a snowman and when he was finished we put a hat on it. We went inside after we had a snowball fight.
Paris

In the weekend I was making a snowman. I was playing a snow fighting game. I think my boots liked the snow.
Caleb

On Saturday my mum made a snowman. She had fun making it. It was very cold when I helped Mum build the snowman.

Pompom Update

We finally finished winding the wool around our two pieces of cardboard. The hole in the centre was so small that it was hard to push through any more wool.

We needed to ask the children from Room 8 to come and help us to cut our pompoms because it was very tricky.

Once the wool was cut from around the outside edge, a piece of wool was tied between the two bits of cardboard as tight as possible. Then we cut the two bits of cardboard and peeled them away.

Finally after a lot of hard work we have our pompoms. A big thank you to the parents that helped some of us and to the children from Room 8.

Static Electricity - Inquiry

You will need:
a pen, a piece of tissue, a jersey

Method
Take a pen. Rub it on a jersey or through your hair ten times. Use the pen to pick up the piece of tissue paper.

Result
The tissue paper should 'stick' to the pen for a short amount of time. This is static electricity.

This is what Séamus wrote:
We did some science in Room 3 with tissue paper and a red pen. We combed the red pen through our hair. We put the red pen on the tissue paper. Then we lifted the tissue paper with the pen. Then it fell down because it lost energy.

Construction - Making Pompoms

We are making pompoms. How do you make pompoms?

You need two pieces of cardboard and lots of wool. We got the two cardboard circles with holes in the middle and then we had to wind the wool around the cardboard, in and out of the hole. We will cut it when its finished.
Brooklyn F

Miss Swney cut circles with holes in the middle of them. There were 46 circles. We had wool for the pompoms. We had to wind the wool around through the hole in the middle. We started on Friday. When we are finished we are going to use them for sport in Room 3.
Breyah

Room 3 made pompoms. We had two pieces of cardboard. They were a circle shape with holes in the middle. We threaded the wool through the holes. The wool felt soft and cuddly. The colours were pink and lots of others.

Inquiry -- Mix and Move

Using two glasses, we placed a couple of teaspoons of salt in one and a couple of drops of red food colouring in the other. Then we poured warm tap water into both glasses. The tap water with the salt in it needed to be stirred until the salt had dissolved.

"Dissolving is when the salt disappears into the water, like it melts". Reid

When the salt had dissolved we poured some of the food colouring water into the salted water.

The food colouring mix dispersed throughout the salted water and then it rose to the top of the salted water and stayed there.

We found that the coloured tap water moved to the top of the salted water because salt water is heavier than tap water.

Floating Egg

As part of our Inquiry unit we carried out an experiment using an egg, salt and water. The aim was to see if we could make an egg float in water. We initially placed the egg into a container of tap water. Then we began adding measured amounts of salt until the egg floated. This experiment has left us with some questions. Please feel free to leave us a comment to help us answer these questions.

How can salt make things float in water?
If a big boat had a hole in the side of it, will it float in the Dead Sea?

A visit to school by our special friends

On Friday as part of a unit on mass the children were able to bring a soft toy to school that could fit into their school bags. Four stations were set up around the classroom.

The first station had us using two plastic bags tied to a piece of elastic that had been taped across the support beams in the classroom. The tops of the plastic bags needed to be lined up before we put a soft toy into each plastic bag. The aim was to find out which soft toy was the heaviest. We repeated the process to find out who had the lightest soft toy too.

Station two was using Miss Swney's electronic kitchen scales.

Station three was a set of VERY heavy balance scales. A soft toy was put into each of the two silver trays to find out the heaviest and then the lightest soft toy.

We also took time to read a story to our special friends.

Floating and Sinking

As part of our Inquiry topic, we have been learning about the Physical World.

We have been learning about floating and sinking. We put an apple in a container full of water. It floated so we peeled the skin off and it still floated. We put the skin into the water too. When we put the paper into the water it floated when it was dry. It sank when it was wet because the water had filled the paper. I thought that the pencil would sink but it floated. The soup spoon sank because it was made out of metal. The tennis ball floated because it had nothing inside it.

Breyah

In Room 3 I have been learning about what floats and sinks. When something is sinking it floats to the bottom of the container. We were put into groups and it was fun. Apples float because they have air bubbles inside them. Our apples were red and crunchy.

Jasmine

In Room 3 we are learning about floating and sinking. We did it outside. We had fun. In the water the tennis ball floated because it had air in it.

Sam

In Room 3 we were sinking and floating things. The peg was sinking because it was metal and plastic. The bark chip floated. It was made out of wood. I liked the day.

Caleb

We, the scientists are looking at floating and sinking. We put the apple in the water. The apple floated. Miss Swney was puzzled. We peeled the apple and it still floated.

On a frosty morning

A frosty morning proved to be a great way of igniting the children's writing. We used our senses to help us with ideas.

On a frosty morning we saw white stuff on the grass. We heard a crunchy sound on the grass when we walked on it. My hands got cold and they ached.

Alex H

On a frosty morning I saw frost in my garden. It was white and cold. We put our hands on the frost and it was cold. It melted.

Brooklyn M

On a frosty morning I saw some frost on the grass. When I stood on it, it made a scrunchy noise. Then I put my hands on the grass and my hands got sore and the grass felt cold. I looked at it and it looked white. When I took my hand off the grass, it had made a hand print on the grass. I saw some crystals.

A visit by a lamb

On Monday the 28th of June, Jared brought Bubbles the lamb to school. She makes a noise like this baa baa. She looks cute because she has fluffy and curly wool. She lives in a box by heater. Bubbles is 8 days old. Bubbles' mum cannot feed her because she is sick.

Xanthe

On Monday, Jared brought a lamb called Bubbles to school. She went baaaa and she did the splits. She felt soft. Bubbles lived in a box. We got to pat Bubbles. She drank milk.

Cold is ... Hot is...

These poems were a result of extension work when the children were asked to write about other topics rather than colours and feelings.

Cold is the ice on the water and when we step on it, it breaks.
Cold is the planet Pluto, an ice land in outer space.
Cold is the wind blowing every day in my face and it is annoying.
Cold is the ice cream that I eat.

Nick

Cold is the ice on the flower pot because of the frost.
Cold is the beer that my Dad drinks because it has been in the fridge too long.
Cold is the ice-block once it has been in the freezer for long enough.
Cold is the ice on my deck from the frost.

Alex M

Cold is the ice-block because it's been in the freezer.
Cold is the wind blowing in the air.
Cold is the rain falling from the clouds.
Cold is the ice on the grass.

George

Hot is the lava about to erupt from the volcano when it is bubbling because it is hot.
Hot are the flames flickering in the fire.
Hot is the bonfire when we put oil on it.
Hot is the desert because there is a line going around the Earth and there is no water so the people have to dig wells.

Reid

Hot is the lava in the volcano.
Hot is the sun burning me.
Hot is the fire burning wood when it is snowing.
Hot are fireworks exploding outside.

Frogs for a day

When one of the children bought frogs into school we used the opportunity to use it for our writing.

Frogs can jump. Brooklyn brought frogs to school today. I was scared of holding one. Then the teacher said that they don't hurt me and she put one of the frogs in my hand. It felt soft on my hand. It was on a Wednesday. It was fun with the frogs.

Dogs

As part of our Literacy programme for our Poetry Unit we wrote 'Diamond Poems'. A Diamond poem has a first line of one word, second line two words and at a middle point you work back in reverse until you have one line again.

We hope you enjoy this work.
